Ever feel like you’re doing everything right, but the scale just isn’t moving fast enough? Coach Jeri reminds us that lasting weight loss takes more than patience—it takes a willingness to keep showing up when the results aren’t happening as quickly as we’d like. With a fresh look at small wins, realistic goals, and the power of staying the course, this is your reminder that slow progress is still progress.

Hi, Coach Jeri here!

Have you ever heard the saying, “Good things come to those who wait”? And yet, one of the most common reasons people give up is frustration that the pounds aren’t coming off fast enough.

Logic seems to be ignored in this situation. Most will agree they didn’t gain weight overnight, so the idea that pounds will magically melt off and never come back is unrealistic. If you were taking golf lessons, would you expect to become a professional golfer after just a few lessons? Of course not. Everything takes time, new skills have to be learned, and we need to appreciate our progress, no matter how small.

Patience has the power to transform past frustrations into a livable, attainable lifestyle where we focus on what is truly important: better health.

It’s common to desire quick results, but sustainable changes take time. It is also vital for safe and lasting weight loss. Quick fixes often fail and can even harm your health. Focus on small, daily habits instead of fast results.

Too many people give up because the results aren’t coming as quickly as they would like instead of renewing their commitment to keep going. If you are honestly following your plan, tracking, weighing, and measuring, you will see results. They may not happen as quickly as we would like, but they will happen.

Learn to accept what your body is willing to do at its own pace. It’s not important how fast or how long it takes. What matters is that you are moving in the right direction toward better health. Once you start building success in small increments, you will create momentum that leads to lasting changes.

When Your Patience Starts to Wane

Here are some tips to dig into when your patience starts to wane:

  1. Why are you doing this? Always keep your “why” close to the surface. Sometimes we need to renew our motivation and remind ourselves why we started.
  2. Shift your focus from a target number to building sustainable habits. The number on the scale is only one measure of success. The habits you build along the way are what will help you maintain your progress.
  3. Focus on the outcome. Better health, better energy, better self-worth, and a better quality of life are all worthwhile goals.
  4. Treat your body with respect. Eat foods that nourish you and help you feel your best. Poor food choices can lead to feelings of guilt and overeating, while nutritious choices can help you feel satisfied and energized.
  5. Be sensible about setting a healthy goal that is comfortable for you. Your goal should challenge you without making you feel defeated before you even begin.
  6. Embrace non-scale victories. Celebrate the improvements that have nothing to do with the number on the scale. More energy, better-fitting clothes, improved mobility, and greater confidence all count.
  7. Be receptive to trying new things. Take advantage of the many ideas members share in the Healthi Community and on Facebook. You never know when you might discover something that works especially well for you.
  8. Most importantly, let go of your old ways. This is a new journey. You don't have to repeat the same patterns simply because they are familiar.

Small Steps Create Lasting Change

Even though the process can sometimes seem endless, what feels impossible long term can be tackled one day at a time, or even one hour at a time.

Success isn't just about the food. When you do something that makes you feel good, repeat it and incorporate it into your life. Celebrate your victories along the way. Over time, you will realize that sensible eating and lifestyle adjustments are no longer daunting tasks. They simply become part of your daily routine.

Little by little, the pounds will begin to come off, and your mindset will be in a better, healthier place.

It is also important to ignore the false advertising and gimmicks that promise fast weight loss. Many times, a quick loss is followed by a gain, along with feelings of guilt, self-loathing, and frustration.

Give Yourself Time

Patience can be difficult, especially when we have such busy lives and live in a fast-paced world. We are used to having everything happen quickly, but lasting change doesn't work that way.

You don't have to solve all your issues at once. Small, consistent efforts will lead to significant and lasting change. With patience, reflection, and a positive mindset, you will find that your staying power grows stronger and impatience no longer interferes with your progress.

Remember, it doesn't matter how quickly you reach your destination. What matters is that you continue moving in the right direction.
