Coach Jeri shares how self-care, positive thinking, and small healthy choices can help you build a healthier lifestyle without guilt or self-criticism.
Hi, Coach Jeri here!
Everyone deserves a happy, fulfilled life. Not a life filled with regret, guilt, and self-hate. Life is about so much more than a number on the scale or the size of the pants you fit into.
When you believe you are worth it and stop constantly criticizing yourself, making positive choices becomes easier. Start treating yourself the way you treat the people you love—with care, kindness, patience, and respect.
Punishing your body with strict rules that are difficult to follow long term only leads to more frustration, self-doubt, and negative feelings about yourself. Instead, think of losing weight and improving your health as acts of self-care. After all, what is happening on the inside of your body matters just as much as what you see on the outside.
We know that what we put into our bodies over time affects our overall health. Sometimes, though, it takes a personal experience to remind us just how important that really is.
I was shocked when I found out I was borderline diabetic, with blood sugar levels approaching the type 2 diabetes range. I was already at my goal weight and had no symptoms. I thought I was doing everything right, but years of yo-yo dieting, gaining, and losing had made me more aware of the importance of taking care of my health.
My doctor suggested medication. I asked her to give me three months so I could at least try to get things under control on my own.
At that point, losing weight and keeping it off were no longer my only goals. I wanted to be healthy.
Along with watching my carbohydrate intake, I started walking in the water and swimming, something I now do year-round and really enjoy. I began paying closer attention to nutrition labels, using the scanner in my Healthi app, and, most importantly, watching my portion sizes.
Most people think losing weight is all about eating less or even starving yourself. I think many of us come from that mindset because it's what we've been taught for so many years.
The truth is, when you focus on eating fresh, nutrient-rich foods and making sure you're getting adequate protein, fiber, and vitamins, you can begin to feel better without feeling so deprived.
Taking care of yourself shouldn't feel like punishment. It should feel like something you're doing because you deserve to be healthy.

Sometimes, the biggest change we need to make isn't in our food choices. It's in the way we think about ourselves.
Here are some ways to incorporate the power of "I deserve" into your everyday life.
1. Shift from hating your body to caring for your body.
Your weight and size have nothing to do with your worth. Instead of focusing on everything you dislike about your body, start appreciating what it does for you every single day. Your body deserves care and respect at every size, not just when you reach a certain number on the scale.
2. Drop the guilt.
We all have a day here or there when we enjoy an indulgence. It's OK! This is life. One meal, one snack, or one day doesn't erase your progress.
Instead of feeling guilty or criticizing yourself, simply move forward. Use setbacks as opportunities to learn rather than reasons to quit. You don't have to be perfect to be successful.
3. Remember that your value as a person is constant.
You do not gain value because you lost weight, and you do not lose value when you gain it.
Your worth isn't something you have to earn by reaching a goal. You are the same valuable person today as you will be when you reach your healthiest weight.
4. Make yourself a priority.
It's difficult to treat yourself as a priority when you're constantly putting yourself down.
Think about how you encourage someone you love when they're struggling. You wouldn't tell them they're a failure because they had a difficult day. You would remind them of how far they've come and encourage them to keep going.
You deserve that same kindness and encouragement from yourself.
5. Don't postpone your life.
So many of us postpone trips or events until we are thinner. But as I've shared before, you are more than a number on the scale.
We tell ourselves, "I'll do that when I lose weight," or "I'll feel more comfortable once I reach my goal."
But putting life on hold until you lose weight only creates more feelings of deprivation and regret. You miss out on experiences, memories, and opportunities that you may never get back. Once that time is gone, it's gone forever.
I did this often myself. Now, I'm doing things like walking through the rainforest, jumping off boats, and really enjoying these experiences!
I don't want to look back and wish I had done more. I want to enjoy the life I have right now.
6. Move for joy, not punishment.
Physical activity shouldn't feel like something you have to do to make up for what you ate.
Find something you genuinely enjoy. Walk outside, swim, dance, or join an exercise class. Not only will you benefit from the movement, but the socialization and friendships can enrich your life as well.
When you enjoy what you're doing, you're much more likely to continue doing it.
One of the most beneficial changes you can make is learning to think positively about the choices you make each day.
The goal isn't to create a long list of rules you have to follow. It's to make decisions that are realistic, manageable, and easy to incorporate into your life for the long term.
Here are a few simple ways to begin.
1. Make your health a priority.
Life will get in the way from time to time. We all have responsibilities, unexpected challenges, and busy schedules. But taking care of yourself should always be a priority.
There will never be a perfect time when everything falls into place. You have to decide that your health matters enough to make room for it, even when life gets busy.
2. Choose to make healthier choices.
You have the ability to make decisions that support your health, one small choice at a time.
Little by little, try having a piece of fruit instead of a cookie. That doesn't mean you can never have the cookie! It simply means you're making an effort to add more nutritious choices into your daily routine.
Focus on adding healthy foods and habits rather than constantly thinking about what you need to take away.
3. Be realistic about your goals.
Set goals that make sense for your life and your abilities. Unrealistic expectations often lead to disappointment and frustration.
You don't have to change everything overnight. Small, consistent improvements can make a tremendous difference over time.
4. Remember that every day is a new opportunity.
Every day you wake up is a good day to work toward living your best life.
Yesterday may not have gone as planned, but that doesn't mean today has to be the same. Each morning gives you another opportunity to make choices that support your health and happiness.
5. Remember that your best investment is in yourself.
You are capable of making good decisions and positive choices for your life.
Investing in your health isn't selfish. It's one of the most important things you can do for yourself and the people who love you.
The time and effort you put into improving your health today can help you enjoy a better quality of life for years to come.

You deserve to live your best life because you are worth it.
A person's worth isn't determined by wealth, height, clothing size, or body weight. Everyone is valuable, and everyone deserves the opportunity to live a healthy, happy, and fulfilling life.
Don't spend your days waiting until you've lost a certain number of pounds to start enjoying yourself. Don't let guilt over yesterday's choices prevent you from making better ones today. And most importantly, don't allow negative thoughts about yourself to stand in the way of the life you want to live.
Turn your dreams into action. Visualize the life you want, have faith in your ability to achieve it, and begin making small choices that bring you closer to that life. Each morning is a fresh opportunity to take another step toward a healthier you. Commit to taking care of yourself, treating yourself with kindness, and living each day to the fullest.
You don't have to wait until you reach your goal to deserve happiness, confidence, or self-respect.
You deserve those things right now.
